Enhancing Mental Health Crisis Response in Indiana

What We Did

In 2024, we conducted research for The Indiana Division of Mental Health Addiction after the launch of 988 Mental Health Crisis Hotline. The goal was to uncover how many Indiana residents understood the program and use data to inform the strategic planning process.

Our Methodology

We began with comprehensive qualitative research. It involved interviews with stakeholders and with community members. The research was crucial in providing insights about the current perceptions and expectations of the 988 hotline. We also conducted additional discussions with DMHA team to discuss and document program objectives. Our intentional sampling strategy emphasized equity: we focused on underrepresented communities through community outreach. Outreach also involved committee members.

Our Findings

Less than 25% of participants were aware of the REST program. When participants were made aware, they recognized its potential to provide immediate support in crisis situations. The responses provided insights into concerns to address and hinderances to fix to improve affinity for the program.

How Our Research Informed Actions

Our research underscored awareness gaps that allowed the REST program team to prioritize and plan for changes. The data informed the development of future outreach strategies and improvements the the mental health crisis response framework in Indiana. This helps ensure more support for communities in need.
